This is an incredibly valuable little book. The preface is written by Raymond Oppenheimer who dedicated his own book McGuffin & Co 12 years later to Gladys Adlam, fondly known as Grannie Adie.

The book contains over 90 illustrations and photographs (mostly by the famous canine photographer Mr Thomas Fall who was actually a series of three people from 1857 to 1990, the last being a woman called Barbara Bourne). Many of these photographs have not been published anywhere else and the extensive collection is really special. There is a particularly stunning photograph of International Champion Raydium Brigadier with four of his white and four of his brindle puppies – all nine of them perfectly posed.

There are also diagrammatic bloodlines and pedigrees of important dogs of the first half of the twentieth century. An overview of the Coloured Bull terrier and the Miniature Bull Terrier are provided. The latter being significant as it was Gladys Adlam who owned the first Miniature Bull Terrier Champion Deldon Delovely.

The Bull Terrier Kennel Club Standard is illustrated with 19 unique drawings showing the good and bad points of the Bull terrier. Another special feature of the book is the attention paid to important members of the Bull terrier community both of the past and the present (that being the start of the 1950s).

Mrs Adlam also offers her wealth of experience in advice to the novice on setting up a breeding kennel, looking after and showing her beloved breed. For the Bull Terrier enthusiast who thrives on the stories of the past, this book is an essential addition to their library.
